Bottrop/Essen Freiheit Emscher - Welheimer Mark

Freiheit Emscher is one of the largest urban development projects currently underway in North Rhine-Westphalia. Covering a total area of around 1,700 hectares in the north of Essen and south of Bottrop, a new, forward-looking urban space will be created in the coming years from what was once a typical ‘intermediate city’ in the Ruhr area.

The Freiheit Emscher area qualifies as a central development hub thanks to a remarkable unique selling point: five former mining sites with a total of around 150 hectares of development land form one of the last large land reserves in the Ruhr area.

The vision goes far beyond the revitalisation of these old industrial wastelands. Freiheit Emscher stands for urban transformation in all its diversity. Our thematic agenda includes key areas of modern urban change that we are tackling together with the participating cities and partners from science and industry, including climate resilience, green energy, sustainable mobility, future technologies, digitalisation and biodiversity.

On one of these five sites, in the Welheimer Mark district, research institutes and knowledge-based companies are to find a new home on around 11 hectares. Under the title ‘Reallaborcampus Wertwasser’ (Wertwasser Real-World Laboratory Campus), the project partners are currently developing a joint location concept in which future technologies in the field of ‘water’ are to be researched, further developed and brought to market maturity directly on site.
