With its industry, infrastructure and research landscape, the Ruhr is predestined for a hydrogen ramp-up. According to a recent market survey, the Ruhr will account for more than a fifth of Germany's total hydrogen demand in 2032.
More about Hydrogen in the Ruhr
On the way to the hydrogen region
The Hydrogen Metropole Ruhr is actively promoting the hydrogen ramp-up in the region through targeted projects, securing political support and international cooperation. With a comprehensive approach comprising climate protection, economic development and the expansion of research and infrastructure programmes, we are laying the foundations for an efficient hydrogen economy in the Ruhr.
Hydrogen is a clean, emission-free energy source - especially when it is produced from renewable sources such as wind and solar energy. Through its use in industry and transport, hydrogen helps to reduce CO₂ emissions and makes a key contribution to climate protection. The Hydrogen Metropole Ruhr supports the 53 municipalities in the Ruhr on their way to a green hydrogen future.
The hydrogen economy offers enormous economic potential for the Ruhr. The development of production facilities, pipelines and storage infrastructures will create new value chains and skilled jobs. The Hydrogen Metropole Ruhr supports companies to build networks with the right players in the region.
The Hydrogen Metropole Ruhr connects companies, research institutions and start-ups in order to jointly develop new technologies and applications. Initiatives such as the H2UB in Essen, which connects young companies with industry, are actively supported. The intensive exchange of knowledge gives rise to new technologies, applications and business models that can have an impact beyond the region.
Reliable hydrogen infrastructure is essential in order to further expand the use of H₂ in the Ruhr. This is where Hydrogen Metropole Ruhr comes in and promotes the expansion of H₂ pipelines, refuelling stations and production capacities. The region benefits from existing pipeline networks and their connection to international pipelines and ports.
The Hydrogen Metropole Ruhr is actively involved in political processes to promote favourable framework conditions for the hydrogen ramp-up. Through targeted dialogue with stakeholders at state and federal level, funding opportunities are identified and political decisions are helped to be made.
The Hydrogen Metropole Ruhr is part of European networks and initiatives to promote a cross-border hydrogen market. This also includes a European H₂ pipeline network to promote the international integration of hydrogen projects.
In a policy paper, HyMR, together with European partners, calls for the rapid implementation of the European Hydrogen Backbone. Only a cross-border strategy can establish hydrogen as a central energy source and create the basis for a climate-neutral industry and resilient energy supply.
