The city of Hamm is developing a new urban district in the waterside vicinity of the Datteln-Hamm Canal. In future, residential and office space will be created here with a top waterfront location, offering direct (walking distance) links to Hamm city centre. The main railway station is just 800 m from the site. A high level of spatial quality is generated via public investment in the design of the Schleusenplatz area within the quarter. The building of a new water sports centre (canoeing) with independent gastronomic offers has seen € 5 m already invested in structural developments. Work began in September 2019.
The site features optimal links to local and interregional transport routes – the recently modernised main railway station is a crossing point for the two most important German ICE express train routes, Cologne – Berlin and Hamburg – Munich, whilst the two autobahns A1 and A2 can be reached in 20 and 15 minutes respectively. Two hotels, the shops of the town centre as well as a museum, library, VHS adult education centre and a university are just a five-minute walk away. In addition to the central bus station there are also public and private parking facilities in the direct vicinity, enabling optimal local accessibility.
Hamm is a university and knowledge centre, with the Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences, SRH University Hamm, the Fraunhofer application centre and the Innovationszentrum Hamm. Trimodal transport connections (water, road, rail) ensure good accessibility.
