Modernized and revitalized
Shining in a new light: modernized and revitalized, Bottrop's city center is regaining one of its trademarks. New attractive tenants from future-oriented sectors - including the 4-star Best Western Hotel with 155 rooms - will move into the former Karstadt department store, which had to close in 2016, at the beginning of next year. With a balanced mix of food retail, drugstore, fitness, hotel and other facilities for daily needs, it now presents itself as a modern multi-tenant commercial building in a central location. The interior areas have been completely refurbished, and the entire building services have been replaced and brought up to the latest standards. In addition, the commercial building has 25 customer parking spaces.
Theodor Althoff opened the department store in Bottrop in 1892 as the second branch of his newly founded group. For more than 100 years it was one of the most important addresses in the heart of the city with a sales area of 5,000 m2. Damaged by a bombing raid, it reopened two years later and was renamed "Karstadt" in 1963, like all Althoff department stores. The new owners had the imposing department store façade redesigned in order to preserve it as a prominent feature of Bottrop's city centre. The refurbished commercial building is accessible from all sides and offers all tenants a connection to the pedestrian zone.
